Lumen Field sits in the middle of SoDo, Seattle’s industrial district just south of downtown, wedged between the stadium district’s own light rail station and the waterfront. It’s one of the most transit-accessible venues in the entire World Cup, which is convenient, because the stadium’s own parking garage is explicitly not built for the kind of crowd a World Cup match brings.
The On-Site Garage Problem
Lumen Field Event Center’s parking garage holds roughly 2,000 stalls, a number that sounds substantial until it’s measured against a stadium that seats more than 68,000 for soccer configuration. That garage has long been reserved primarily for premium ticket holders, suite holders, and pre-purchased permit holders for Seahawks and Sounders games, and World Cup organizers are expected to follow the same model. For the vast majority of fans, the on-site garage simply isn’t an option, prepaid or otherwise.
SoDo’s Surface Lots and the Stadium District
The stadium district around Lumen Field and neighboring T-Mobile Park has a deep bench of privately operated surface lots, many of which have served Seahawks, Mariners, and Sounders crowds for years. Prices on event days for nearby lots typically run in the $30 to $50 range depending on proximity, climbing higher for marquee events. Expect World Cup-specific pricing to sit at or above the top of that range given global demand.
Link Light Rail Goes Straight to the Gates
The single biggest advantage Lumen Field has over most World Cup venues is the SoDo light rail station, a direct stop on Sound Transit’s Link line that sits essentially at the stadium’s doorstep. Link connects straight through downtown Seattle, up to the University of Washington, and out to Sea-Tac Airport, making it realistic to skip a car entirely from a downtown hotel or the airport. Sound Transit has a track record of running added frequency for major stadium events, and World Cup matches should see similar treatment.
The Bottom Line
With the venue’s own garage largely off-limits to general parking and a light rail station practically built into the stadium footprint, Lumen Field is a straightforward case: ride Link in, skip the SoDo lot scramble, and save the driving for a day without a match.
